E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was organized in Paris in 1801 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834). The next year, E.I. du Pont purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware, and began making preparations to establish a black powder manufactory. During the winter of 1802 to 1803, E.I. du Pont recruited a small workforce and began building the company's mills. By the spring of 1804, gunpowder was being produced, and the company had secured a commitment from President Thomas Jefferson to purchase DuPont gunpowder for the Army and Navy. With this contract in place, the company started to recruit immigrant Irish workers for the mills and hired its first independent sales agents.

During the War of 1812, DuPont became a major supplier of gunpowder for the U.S. government as its total sales exceeded 500,000 pounds. After the war, the company expanded rapidly as it began selling large quantities of powder to coal mine operators and railroad entrepreneurs. In 1837 Henry du Pont, E.I.'s son took over the management of the company and began to rationalize the company's manageria

His descendants, the du Pont family, have been one of the richest and most prominent American families since the 19th century, with generations of influential businessmen, politicians and philanthropists. In 1807, du Pont was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia.

    Early life and education

Du Pont was born 24 June 1771, in Paris, the son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours and Nicole-Charlotte Marie-Louise le Dée de Rencourt. His father was a political economist who had been elevated to the nobility in 1784 by letters patent granted by King Louis XVI, allowing him to carry the honorable de Nemours suffix. Growing up on his father's estate, "Bois des Fossés", near Égreville, young du Pont was enthusiastic about his studies in most subjects, and showed particular interest in explosives.

    Du Pont was a Huguenot.

In the fall of 1785, du Pont entered Collège de France in Paris. Two years later, he was accepted by the friend of his father and noted chemist Antoine Lavoisier as a student in the Régie des poudres, the government agency responsible for the manufacture of gunpowder. It was from Lavoisier that he gained his expertise in nitrate extraction and manufacture. He studied "advanced explosives production techniques"

After a brief apprenticeship, he took a position at the government-owned powder works in Essonne but quit after Lavoisier left.

Du Pont eventually sailed before his family and landed at Newport, Rhode Island on 1 January 1800, along with his father and his brother's famil

Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours (June 24, 1771 – October 31, 1834), known as Irénée du Pont, or E.I. du Pont, was a French-born Americanchemist and industrialist who emmigrated to the United States in 1799 and founded the gunpowder manufacturing business, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. His descendants, the Du Pont family, were one of America's richest and most prominent families in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

During its nearly 200 year history, Irénée du Pont's business has had a major impact on American affairs. The DuPont Company was a major producer of war supplies in both World War I and World War II. New materials developed by the company during the 1960s included teflon, corfam, and corian. Additionally, the chemical and manufacturing giant was instrumental to the success of the Apollo Space program (1961-1975).

Irénée du Pont's entrepreneurial instincts and his patriotic instincts led to a company whose great discoveries would serve the best interests of not just the U.S., but ultimately the world. Like Alfred Nobel, he chose to apply his personal discoveries and individual wealth towards the greater good of science and mankind.
