Michael Westen

Fictional character

Michael Westen played by Jeffrey Donovan is a burned spy who is forced to work in Miami while figuring out who burned him. He had a relationship with Fiona Glenanne, but proved to be afraid of commitment. Above all else, he fears his neurotic mother who is entirely focused on Michael. He keeps up a good, friendly relationship with Sam Axe. While searching for answers about his burn notice, Michael becomes an unlicensed freelance private investigator/troubleshooter to help those who have unique problems, which can't involve the authorities. Michael Alan Westen was born on January 7, 1967, and raised in Miami, the first of two sons to Frank and Madeline Westen. His father was a violent man, who would physically and emotionally abuse his sons as an obedience measure, and his mother did little to prevent it. His father would also take advantage of him, for example, he forced Michael to fake a seizure inside a Mr. Goodwrench store so his father could steal spark plugs. The last words his father said to him were "I'll see you in hell, boy." Eight years before the beginning of the series, his father died. After persistent persuasion by his mother, Michael finally visited his father's grave. Michael's younger brother, Nate, is a compulsive gambler who has a history of stealing from Michael to fund his addiction. However, after helping Michael and almost dying, he has turned his life around, which Michael seems to have difficulty believing. After a brief quarrel with his brother, Michael wins his father's black 1973 Dodge Charger by a coin toss.

Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 years old, and his mother forged his father's signature so he could enlist because his father was such a

Burn Notice is an American espionage television series created by Matt Nix, which originally aired on the USA Network for a total of seven seasons from June 28, 2007, to September 12, 2013. The show stars Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, Sharon Gless, and (beginning in season four) Coby Bell.

The premise of the show focuses on Michael Westen (Donovan), a former spy who was fired and cut off from the legitimate world by the agency he used to work for. Trapped in Miami with few resources, Westen takes jobs as an unlicensed private investigator while unraveling the mystery of who burned him and why.

The series received generally positive reviews from critics for the show's pace, humor, dialogue, and combination of espionage and crime drama presented in an irreverent tone. In 2010, the series was the #2 cable scripted series by viewership with 6.7 million viewers, behind Royal Pains. In addition to the television episodes, the show has a prequel movie and tie-in novels.

    Plot

The title of the series refers to the burn notices issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents or sources who are considered to have become unreliable. When spies are burned, their connection to an espionage organization is terminated, leaving them without access to cash or influence. According to the narration during the opening credits, the burned spy has no prior work history, no money, no support network – in essence, no identity. The television series uses second-person narrative and frequent voice-overs providing exposition from the viewpoint of covert operations agent Michael Westen, played by Donovan. The voice-over commentary is in the form of tips for fledgling agents as if for a training or orientation film.

With the dynamic duo doing the dirty work for an archnemesis, Michael’s mother Madeline joining in more on the fun and fighting bad guys week in and week out, it’s no wonder they’re quarreling hundreds of feet up in the air.

“We’re trying to catch up with how deep this man has dug this grave,” Burn Notice star Gabrielle Anwar shared with The Hollywood Reporter of the gang trying to overcome the immovable obstacle that is Anson, the guy who burned Michael. “There’s plenty of hope, but this character is a significant match for Michael’s wiles.” So much so that the fifth season will culminate with a big decision for Fiona, Anwar says, of where she stands with Michael and most importantly, this blackmailing scheme they find themselves in the middle of.

Anwar talked to THR about that season-ending moment, why Fiona is hoping for Michael to save the day (again) and why her character will never settle.

The Hollywood Reporter: Fiona is in a very different situation than she’s used to. Are there any new struggles that she will have to deal with?

Gabrielle Anwar: Well, I think that Anson – beautifully played by Jere Burns – has both Michael and Fiona by the balls. I don’t think they’ve ever been this vulnerable, probably not only with each other, but with themselves, so I think that they’ve been so caught up in not realizing just how committed they’ve become without becoming official in their relationship. Their relationship has transcended levels of intimacy that neither of them has allowed themselves to experience before. Anson, who’s rather adept at screwing with one’s m

    Overview[]

    Character Analysis[]

Grew Up... in Miami with his parents Frank and Madeline. His father would physically abuse Michael and exploit him for his own illicit activities, for example forcing Michael to make a scene in a store so Frank could steal. Oddly, his rough upbringing prepared Michael well for his future career. As he puts it, "A bad childhood is the perfect background for covert ops. You don't trust anyone, you're used to getting smacked around, and you never get homesick."

Living... back in his hometown of Miami in a trashy apartment above a nightclub. He’s not too concerned about his present living conditions; he has a lot more pressing issues to worry about.

Profession... private investigator/freelance spy. Michael was an undercover CIA agent until he was blacklisted – or given a “burn notice” – without any explanation. With the help of his ex-girlfriend, Fiona, and his friend, Sam, he now works as a private eye and all-around problem-solver to pay the bills, while simultaneously investigating his ousting from the CIA.

Interests... eating yogurt. He just can’t get enough.

Relationship Status... single, at least technically. Michael has a very complicated relationship with Fiona, often implying how important she is to him but never really giving her the commitment she wants or feels that she deserves. He is too wrapped up in learning why he was “burned.” Michael has little interest in dating other women, though, and he
