Raaj Kumar (born Kulbhushan Pandit; 8 October 1926 – 3 July 1996) was an Indian actor who worked in Hindi films. He worked as a police officer before entering the film industry. In a career that spanned over four decades, he went on to star in 70 films and is regarded as one of the most successful actors of Indian cinema.
Personal life
Kulbhushan Pandit was born on 8 October, 1926 in Loralai in the Baluchistan Province of British India (now in Pakistan) into a Kashmiri Pandit family. In the late 1940s, he moved to Bombay, where he became a sub-inspector under Bombay Police. In the 1960s, he married Jennifer Pandit, an Anglo-Indian, whom he met on a flight where she was an air hostess. She later changed her name to Gayatri Kumar as per Hindu customs. They had three children, sons Puru Raaj Kumar (an actor), Panini Raaj Kumar and daughter Vastavikta Pandit, who made her screen debut in 2006 film Eight: The Power of Shani.
Career
1952–1964: Early career and breakthrough
Raaj Kumar began his career with Rangeeli in 1952 and followed it with Anmol Sahar (1952), Aabshar (1953), Ghamand (1955), none of which could establish him. After many years of struggle, he got his breakthrough with Mehboob Khan's epic drama film Mother India (1957). It opened to critical acclaim and emerged an All Time Blockbuster at the box office as well as the most successful film of the 1950s. It went on to win several accolades and was featured in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. The huge box office success of Mother India was followed by another blockbuster in S. S. Vasan's social drama film Paigham (1959), which had Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in the lead. He is the son of actor Raaj Kumar and is married to Croatian model Koraljika Grdak. Puru Raaj Kumar was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India to a Kashmiri Pandit father, Raaj Kumar and Gayatri (original name Jennifer), an Anglo-Indian. Raaj Kumar was an actor, and Jennifer an air hostess. Puru was a student of Gettysburg College where he majored in economics, psychology and theatre. Kumar's first film Bal Bramhachari was released in 1996, where his co-star was Karisma Kapoor. In 2000, he did Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai where he played a negative role, and Mission Kashmir. In the following years his releases included Khatron Ke Khiladi (2001),Dushmani (2002),LOC Kargil (2003). After several flops at the box office, Kumar was not able to establish a strong footing in Bollywood. He acted in Jaago in 2004. After more than two years, his film Umrao Jaan (2006) was released. His latest film was Action Jackson (2014) where he played the role of ACP Shirke. Kumar married Croatian model, Koraljika Grdak on 14 October 2011 in Zagreb. On 17 December 1993, Kumar ran his car over eight people who were sleeping on a pavement in Bandra, Mumbai. Three people died in this accident. It is also said that he was drunk at that time and was arrested for this incident. Later, he was released. It is said that the matter was settled out of court and he had to pay fine for this mishap. Raaj Kumar was indeed one of the most iconic figures in the Hindi film industry, known for his unique dialogue delivery, magnetic screen presence, and a string of memorable performances. His deep voice and powerful roles in films like Pakeezah, Waqt, Neel Kamal, and Heer Ranjha made him a favorite among audiences. His persona was intense, and he was celebrated for playing characters that commanded authority, often with an undercurrent of mystery or gravitas. His son, Puru Raj Kumar, entered Bollywood with much fanfare, thanks to his lineage and a debut alongside Karisma Kapoor in Bal Bramhachari (1996). Despite the advantages of being born into a well-known film family and having a promising launch, Puru’s career never really reached the heights that were expected. He struggled to carve out a niche for himself, perhaps due to the overwhelming expectations tied to his father’s legendary status and the changing dynamics of Bollywood during that era.
