Books

Vanderpool wrote the books Navigating Early, and Moon Over Manifest. Moon Over Manifest won the 2011 Newbery Medal. It tells the story of a 12-year-old girl, Abilene Tucker, who finds some secrets that start to put together the story of her father’s upbringing.

Vanderpool originally got the idea for Navigating Early (published 2013) from one of her mother’s dreams. In the dream, there was a boy who was amazing at piano. Although he never had any lessons, he could hear a difficult piece just once and would be able to play it perfectly. From the dream, she created the book about a boy who had an unexplainable gift, that creates a close friendship with a girl. “Where an author gets her ideas is simple. Ideas come from watching, listening, paying attention, and most of all from the characters themselves.” - Clare Vanderpool.

    Biography

Clare Vanderpool was born in Wichita in 1964. If you ask anyone who knows her, they will tell you that she has a very strong connection to place.  She lives in Wichita, Kansas, about four blocks from where she grew up, in an old neighborhood called College Hill.  From her house she can walk to her parents' house, her sister's house, the school she went to and where her kids also attended, the pool, the sledding hill, and two bookstores!
She grew up reading many wonderful books in a lot of strange places.  Books like Harold and the Purple Crayon, Anne of Green Gables, and Island of the Blue Dolphins in places like dressing rooms, the bathroom, and church.  (Like you never read a book in church.)
While she does have a college degree in English and Elementary Education, her best education has come from reading, listening to family stories, looking out the car window on road trips, pretending to be pirates with her brother, and just plain imagining.
Besides writing she likes to go to the pool with her kids, browse at the bookstore, have a neighbor over for tea, watch re-runs of Monk, have a lot of kids at her house, and go out for dinner with her husband.  Life is good.

A Conversation with Clare Vanderpool about Navigating Early

Congratulations on winning the Newbery Medal for Moon Over Manifest. What was it like writing your next book, Navigating Early, after winning this prestigious award?

It was challenging. Fortunately, I was well into the story before the Newbery was announced. Part of the challenge, even before the Newbery, was just getting acquainted with and really falling in love with these new characters and spending time figuring out the story they have to tell. Of course, winning a Newbery on a first book does come with a certain amount of pressure. I knew the next book would be ripe for comparison. I really had to work at setting aside thoughts of expectations and comparisons and just let the story take its course. Jack and Early are fairly assertive characters and, once I could let go a little, they were more than willing to take the lead.
