    Melchor Gastón Ferrer (August 25, – June 2, ) was an American actor, director, and producer, active in film, theatre, and television. He achieved prominence on Broadway before scoring notable film hits with Scaramouche (), Lili (), and Knights of the Round Table (also ). He starred opposite his wife, actress Audrey Hepburn, in War and Peace () and produced her film Wait Until Dark ().

    Beginning in the s, Ferrer acted extensively in Italian films and appeared in several cult hits, including The Antichrist (), The Black Corsair () and Nightmare City (). He was also a co-founder of the La Jolla Playhouse.

    Early life

    Ferrer was born in Elberon, New Jersey, of Spanish and Irish descent. His father, Dr. José María Ferrer (December 3, &#; February 23, ), was born in Havana, Cuba, of Spanish ancestry. José was an authority on pneumonia and served as chief of staff of St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. He was 59 years old at the time of Mel's birth and died three years later.     Actor/director/producer Mel Ferrer was born Melchor Gaston Ferrer on August 25, , in Elberon, New Jersey. The son of a Cuban-born surgeon and a Manhattan socialite, he went to prep school and attended Princeton University. From the age of 15 he worked in summer stock. After Princeton he became an editor on a small Vermont newspaper and wrote a children's book, "Tito's Hats." He became a chorus dancer on Broadway in in two musicals and made his New York debut as an actor two years later. After a bout with polio he started in radio as a disc jockey in Texas and Arkansas and rose to producer-director of top-rated shows for NBC in New York. He made a modest debut as a director at Columbia with the low-budget The Girl of the Limberlost (), then returned to acting on Broadway to star in Lillian Smith's "Strange Fruit." He was John Ford's assistant on The Fugitive ().

    Ferrer made his screen acting debut in Lost Boundaries (). He is best remembered for the role of the lame puppeteer in Lili () and as Prince Andrei in War and Peace (). He directed Claudette Colbert in The Secret Fury () and Audrey Hepburn - his wife at the time - in Green Mansions (). Ferrer produced the hit Wait Until Dark (), also with Hepburn. In the following year, the couple separated and ultimately divorced. Since had been producing and acting mainly in Europe.

    Early life

    Ferrer was born Melchor Gastón Ferrer in the Elberon section of Long Branch, New Jersey, of Cuban and Irish descent. His father, Dr. José María Ferrer (–), was born in Cuba, of Spanish ancestry, and was an authority on pneumonia and served as chief of staff of St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. His American mother, the former Mary Matilda Irene O'Donohue (–), was a daughter of coffee broker Joseph J. O'Donohue, New York's City Commissioner of Parks, a founder of the Coffee Exchange, and a founder of the Brooklyn-New York Ferry. An ardent opponent of Prohibition, Irene Ferrer was named, in , the New York State chairman of the Citizens Committee for Sane Liquor Laws.

    Ferrer had three siblings. His elder sister was Dr. M. Irené Ferrer, a cardiologist and educator, who helped refine the cardiac catheter and electrocardiogram. His brother, Dr. Jose M. Ferrer, was a surgeon. His other sister, Teresa (Terry) Ferrer, was the religion editor of The New York Herald Tribune and education editor of Newsweek. The family is not related to actors José or Miguel Ferrer.

    His mother's family, the O'Donohues, were prominent Roman Catholics. Mel Ferrer's aunt, Marie Louise O'Donohue (Mrs. Joseph J. O'Donohue, Jr.) was named a papal countess, and his mother's sister, Teresa Riley O'Donohue, a leading figure in American Catholic charities and welfare organizations, was granted permission by Pope Pius XI to install a private chapel in her New York City apartment.
