    Bernhardt was born in in Bischofswerda, Germany, trained in business, and successfully established himself in Dresden. He traveled and wrote travel books, stories, and plays. He resided in New York and London.

    Bernhardt was in London when World War I broke out and in he was interned on the Isle of Man. This seclusion gave him time to reflect, question, and deepen his understanding. He awakened a desire to help humanity. He was released in the Spring of and returned to Germany.

    He began to write "In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message" in

    In he settled in Austria, Tyrol on a mountain plateau called Vomperberg. Here he continued writing "The Grail Message." Nazis seized power in , ending his work there. He was arrested and exiled to Kipsdorf in the Erzgebirge. He was forbidden any further writing. He died from the effects of his imprisonment and surveillance by the Gestapo.

    After the war his family returned to Vomperberg and carried on his work.

    Oskar Ernst Bernhardt, also known as Abd-ru-shin or Abdruschin (18 April – 6 December ) was a German religious leader, best known as the author of The Grail Message and as prophet and leader of the Grail Movement, a millenariannew religious movement. Beginning in the s, Abd-ru-shin proclaimed that the Millennial kingdom of God would begin on Earth during the mid s, drawing from Christian legend, as well as Theosophy and other Western Esotericism.

    Bernhardt was born in Bischofswerda, in the Kingdom of Saxony, part of the German Empire, in , to a innkeeping family. He trained in business, graduating from a business school. Bernhardt established his own business in and got married, but was accused of fraud on separate occasions by his mother in law and former business partners, and spent 13 months in prison. From around , he traveled and wrote travel books, stories, and plays, with his plays becoming somewhat popular. He was separated from his wife and children and living London when World War I broke out (having recently returned from a business trip to New York) and in he was interned by the British Government on the Isle of Man due to his German nationality. He was released in the spring of and returned to Germany. He likely first began to forumulate his religious ideas during his internment. On Good Friday , Bernhardt proclaimed that Jesus "came down to the Earth in order to transfer his task of the Mediator between God and mankind to the Son of Man." He began to write the religious writings of what ultimately become In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message beginning in and completed it in From he used the pen name "Abd-ru-shin" (originally "Abdruschin") of allegedly Persian-Arabic origin, which Bernhardt originally interpreted as meaning “The Son of the Holy Spirit”, but which many later authors have translated as "Son of Ligh

    The Author

    Abd-ru-shin, the Author of In the Light of Truth – The Grail Message, was born on April 18, , in Bischofswerda, Germany, with the given name Oskar Ernst Bernhardt. While developing and writing the lectures of his Grail Message, he took the name Abd-ru-shin, which translates to Servant of the Light.

    The Author spent a happy childhood in the small Saxon town of Bischofswerda. Following completion of school there, he was trained in commerce and served a business apprenticeship in nearby Dresden.

    The history of the origin of the Grail Message

    Abd-ru-shin’s Work In the Light of Truth – The Grail Message came into being during a period of time spanning a little less than two decades. Initially, individual lectures were published in a series of booklets called the Gralsblättern. In the first, small edition of The Grail Message was released; in a large, one-volume edition was issued. Finally, the three-volume book, the Author’s final edition, was published. This is the book that is distributed today.

    In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message is a book written by Oskar Ernst Bernhardt (–), the leader of the Grail Movement, a millenariannew religious movement, and first published in under the pen name Abd-ru-shin. An expanded, complete edition was published by the author under the name of Abdruschin in , entitled Im Lichte der Wahrheit (In the Light of the Truth). It was a collection of 91 lectures, written to build upon each other, presenting a complete picture of Creation. Between and , a further total of 59 additional lectures were released.

    Abd-ru-shin went on to write and publish more than 50 individual lectures after , however the deteriorating conditions in Europe prevented him from publishing any further books during his lifetime. When the Nazis seized power in Austria in , Abd-ru-shin was arrested, extradited to Germany, and kept under house arrest until his death in December

    During his final years, Abd-ru-shin was forbidden by the Gestapo from working on the Grail Message. Abd-ru-shin never authorized any changes after publishing his version; he wrote, "I do not hand over the Message so that you can deal with It as you see fit in your efforts to transmit It to humanity, but I COMMAND that It must remain immutable in all that It contains and in the way It is! Whoever will change even the slightest meaning, the smallest word, even with the best intention, is guilty of wrongdoing! It is the Holy Word of God, which man may not touch in order to adapt It in a way more convenient for himself or for easier understanding by indolent human spirits!"
