Season overview
Open auditions were held in late 2017 within Orlando, Cincinnati, Savannah, Milwaukee, Houston, Las Vegas, New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles (while online auditions were accepted). As in previous years, the judges' auditions were held and filmed in March 2017 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The Judge Cuts episodes included actor Ken Jeong, actress Olivia Munn, singer Martina McBride, and comedian Chris Hardwick appearing as guest judges.
Thirty-six of the participants auditioning secured a place in the live quarter-finals, with twelve quarter-finalists appearing in each of the shows. Among the contestants: acrobatic group Zurcaroh, singer Michael Ketterer, singer Courtney Hadwin, singer Amanda Mena, and singer Makayla Phillips who had each received a golden buzzer from the main judges and host; choir Voices of Hope, choir Angel City Chorale, ballroom dancers Quin and Misha, and rapper Flau’jae who had each received a Golden Buzzer from the guest judges; opera singer Daniel Emmet, novelty water-spitting act Human Fountains, and multimedia performance group Front Pictures who were chosen as Wildcard quarter-finalists. Country singer Martina McBride is tonight’s guest judge. Which act will be her golden buzzer? Eighteen acts perform, but only SEVEN advance to the live shows.
The Savitsky Cats – Cat Act – Mother daughter duo–Mom has been training cats for 20 years. She used to find them on the streets. This time new tricks and new cats! Juuust waiting for one of these cats, at one point, to seemingly say F U and wander away. It almost happens at one point! Or was that part of the act? Endless treats are key to the success of this act, apparently. A mildly entertaining act, that banks on folks awe over cats taking direction. Because the tricks in particular aren’t actually that spectacular. Howie loved it. He feels the act stepped it up. Could not resist a bad pun–noting the duo almost had a “catastrophy” when the one kitty almost didn’t play. Martina loved it “It was thrilling to watch.” Heidi felt they put on a “real show.” It made Mel smile. Simon thinks the act would make a great TV show. Hm. The duo want to open a cat theater.
Blue Tokyo – Dance troupe – The group promised the judges new flips and tricks. But it must not have impressed them that much–the act is edited down. Simon says “It left me a little cold.” Howie says he’ll fight for them.
OC Music and Dance School – High school group perform Kesha’s “Praying.” Mel thought it was a step up from the first time. Howie disagrees. Simon thinks they’re too serious. With the little bit of screen time plus criticism they got here, it’s another obvious NOPE.
The PAC Dance Team – High School Dance Team – The kids consider the director their “mom.” She helps kids headed in the wrong direction get on the right path. A few The first of four episodes of "America's Got Talent" dedicated to the judge cuts phase of the competition airs on July 17. Over the course of the previous six audition episode of "AGT," the four judges -- Mel B, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel -- said yes to nearly 100 acts. Now they must cut these down to just three dozen who will get a chance to perform on the live shows that start on August 14. Helping them make these tough decisions on July 17 is actor Ken Jeong. As with the regular panel, he also gets a Golden Buzzer that will send an act straight through to the quarter-finals. We have done a little digging and found out which 20 acts appear on the first episode in this round of the reality competition series. Of these, only seven will survive and continue on in their quest to be crowned the season 13 winner.
