D’Angel entered the dancehall scene in the early 2000s and has not looked back since. Dubbed the first lady of dancehall, the artiste has made her mark in the industry with several hit singles over the years.

Born Michelle Downer, the entertainer from childhood knew that she was destined to be on stage because, at an early age, her friends and family would often serve as her audience as she practised her vocals while entertaining them.

D’ Angel sang throughout all of high school as she was a member of the St Catherine High choir.

Upon entering the working world, the artiste did not immediately choose music. Instead she moved to Kingston to pursuit her modelling career with the popular Miguel Models.

She drifted from her musical pursuits and entered the world of glitz, glamour and couture when she landed a modelling job in the early 90s. Strutting runways and landing alluring photo shoots for brands such as Rocawear had become her norm.

While in her modelling heyday, the aspiring artiste auditioned for a group called LOY, which was managed by Horatio Hamilton, music and events promoter for the Sashi series.

The group was in search of a female artiste and D’Angel made the cut. LOY later broke up and that’s when the artiste started her solo career as a dancehall entertainer.

JWS: Tell us who is D’Angel?

D: D’Angel: I’m from Spanish Town. I was born and raise there, grew up very humble, with all my siblings. D’Angel represents life, represents God-fearing, love life to the fullest, family oriented. I’m a very happy person, outgoing, and very approachabl. I’m someone you can approach on the road. I always have time for my fans; they are the ones that really matter when you have a career and the people that look up to you. When you become a public figure you have to respect your fans. That’s the kind of person I am. I’m a downtown girl living the uptown life.

JWS: How would you describe yourself as an artiste?

D: As a performer, I love to challenge myself. I’m always learning new things and trying new things, not only dancehall but I’m a reggae artiste as well. ‘Stronger’ is a reggae song and that’s one of my biggest songs for the year in terms of chart topping. Biography

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Downer sang in high school, modeled internationally in the 1990s, and returned home to Jamaica in 2002. D'Angel's father, Noel "Clive" Downer, was a local entrepreneur. D'Angel has an associate degree in Accounting and Management. She considers 2004 and 2005 to be her "breakout years," according to The Gleaner.

D’Angel had a celebrity marriage to singer, Beenie Man, in 2006 and they recorded the single One Man together. D'Angel and Beenie Man had a son together and split up in 2010, later reunited in 2011. They later divorced.

In 2013, D'Angel was banned for 5 years from performing at Sting by Isaiah Laing of Supreme Promotions. The reason for the ban was due to her impromptu performance of a "lyrical battle" with Ninja Man at Sting 30 that Laing considered "raunchy." She was also criticized for her choice of clothing at the event by Billboard, which described her outfit as "provocative" and "revealing."

In 2017, she went on tour in the United States with the theme of "We Can Survive" and addressing violence and crime through her song of the same name.
