Rebecca Lardener was born in Swanage, UK in October 1971. Her father was a gamekeeper and her mother the local post mistress. She spent her childhood roaming the glorious Dorset countryside, happiest amongst nature whilst keenly observing the local people and places that have fascinated her ever since. Her paintings are influenced particularly by the South West of England and its coastline, depicting as they do life by the sea, captured in her signature palette of subtle blues and greens.
Rebecca gained a BA degree in illustration from Liverpool John Moore’s University. After graduation she worked as a professional artist and illustrator. In 1995, she designed, made and installed 24 animated windows for the prestigious Brown Thomas department store in Dublin, in time for the Christmas lights display in the same year. Her work has been published worldwide, especially her Limited Edition prints which have been sold widely throughout Europe and America. She regularly exhibits with leading galleries throughout the UK and else where. Her delightful naive paintings are bought by collectors worldwide.
The Fine Art Trade Guild awarded Rebecca Lardener the title of Best Up and Coming Artist in 2008 and Best Selling British Artist in 2010. Some commentators have dubbed her “the modern day L*wry”.

Rebecca Lardner is one of the UK’s most highly sought-after and collectable artists. In 2008 she was voted the best new artist in the UK by the nation’s art galleries, and in 2010 she was named as the UK’s Artist of the Year. Since then her whimsical paintings have been featured widely in the media, demand for her work has soared and she has been dubbed ‘the modern day L.S.Lowry’.
Rebecca’s quintessentially British style originates in her Dorset upbringing; although much of her early work is figurative, her love of the distinctive coastline has been the mainstay of her success. Her upbeat scenes portray the lively world of the traditional English fishing village from a contemporary standpoint, with an irresistible combination of quirky humour and technical panache. The timeless subject matter gives these pieces a singular charm and the marine element is accentuated by the distinctive palette that never strays far from the blues, greys and greens of the ocean.
While her enchanting harbour scenes retain the style and colours that have made them so well-loved, there are always new elements in each collection; beach huts, farm animals, art galleries and hotels perfectly situated overlooking the bay…. Her departure into the world of sculpture has also contributed to her ongoing success and status in the art world.
Trained in art to degree level, Rebecca forged an early career in illustration, but her future as a fine artist was always inevitable. While she downplays the mention of celebrity buyers and a one-off commission for the Paul McCartney Music Academy, she is no longer able to downplay her extraordinary success which has taken her work as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.
Rebecca Lardner
With a raft of album cover, record sleeve and magazine commissions behind her, as well as the completion of art work on behalf of Paul McCartney’s Music Academy, respected illustrative artist Rebecca Lardner has made something of a name for herself since leaving Liverpool John Moores University with a BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration. Swanage-born Lardner is renowned for her unique oil on canvas studies of customary fishing community scenes, cognitively collected from her Dorset upbringing. Lardner’s very personal work has been showcased around the world, and particularly in galleries in Europe and America, while the contemporary artist herself has travelled far and wide to add further dimensions and flavours to her pieces.
Her personal, candid insights and representations of typical South-West coastal life and loves are very much redolent of admired Cornish artist of yore, Alfred Wallis, in respect of Lardner’s pre-requisite for using every inch of the canvas at her disposal to tell a tale that doesn’t rely on just a sole player. Her interpretations of traditional fishermen’s cottages, harbour scenes, trawlers bobbing about in the bay, seabirds perched and distant figures engaged in their everyday defy the laws of physics and gravity on some occasions, as the subject matter is stretched, twisted, turned and sculpted to tell the whole story of what’s played out before Lardner’s all-encompassing eyes, not just the one focal-point.
These vividly enticing, moveable feasts of pastel shades of blue, green and grey bring to mind memories of long summer holidays and warm seasons spent under the gaze of the sun, that have captivated both locals and visitors in equal measure, and for a large part symbolise a certain, ancient way of life to coastal villages and towns around Dorset, Devon and Cornwall who rely on the sea and mother nature to earn their keep. It’s Lardner’s gift for affording the canvas the thoroughly
