We, a group of students and lecturers of the Postgraduate Programme in Curating www.curating.org (led by Dorothee Richter), have invited artists to participate in the upcoming issue of OnCurating.org accompanying the exhibition They Printed It! at Kunsthalle Zürich. The exhibition deals with current and historical ephemera, Invitation cards, press releases, inserts, and other forms of artistic (self-)marketing.
The texts for this issue will be provided by Kunsthalle Zürich (ed. Maja Wismer), and it will include “Self-advertisements” by the invited artists. The printed version with all texts will follow; we are publishing the advertisments/inserts section as a preview right now. On-Curating Issue 27 !!

This 27th issue of OnCurating is dedicated to artistic ephemera. Ephemera not only serve to announce an exhibition but they are also the material evidence of a performance, or the work itself in the sense of conceptual art, their classification becomes unclear, and th Indonesian actor and film producer Nicholas Schubring Saputra (born 24 February 1984) is an Indonesianactor and film producer. He first rose to prominence as Rangga in the 2002 hit film Ada Apa dengan Cinta?, a role he reprised in Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? 2 in 2016. He has since established himself as one of Indonesia's most acclaimed actors with two Citra Award wins for Best Actor as the titular character in Riri Riza's Gie in 2005 and Best Supporting Actor in Edwin's Aruna & Her Palate in 2018. Saputra is also an activist dedicated to environmental and conservation issues, as well as supporting children's rights. He has served as executive producer and producer of several environmental films through his production company, Tanakhir Films. In 2019, Saputra was named a UNICEF IndonesiaGoodwill Ambassador. Saputra was born on 24 February 1984 in Jakarta, Indonesia, to Horst Schbring, a German father, and an Indonesian-Javanese mother from Yogyakarta. His maternal grandfather was from Kebumen and his maternal grandmother was from Kutoarjo. After graduating from SMA Negeri 8 Jakarta high school, Saputra continued his study in University of Indonesia. He was named as one of valedictorians in high school. He holds a degree in architecture from University of Indonesia. Saputra started his career in fashion industry as a runway model and has appeared in magazine's covers when he was in high school. He was scouted by a teen magazine while playing baseball in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium when he was fifteen. An inexperienced actor without any history in the entertainment industry, Saputra landed the lead role at his very first audition at age 17, to play in Rudy Soedjarwo's cult classicromanceblockbusterAda Apa d Fotografi (bahaso Inggirih: photography, nan diambiak dari bahaso Yunani yaitunyo "phos": cahayo jo "graphien": malukis/manulih) adolah proses malukis/manulih manggunoan media cahayo. I was there for a reportage about the local contemporary art scene. “To be an art reporter is fun, but if you don’t plan everything in the details it can be very stressing. The first thing you have to do is to focus your research. Maybe you are interested just in the painting scene of that city, or just in the hipster scene, or the influence of craft on contemporary art. 2. Make a previous research on the city Have a quick look of what other people already wrote about the art scene. Don’t exaggerate, it’s better to not build preconceptions based on what other people thinks. The best thing to do is read a novel or two set in the city you are going to visit. Have a look at a very general travel guide that gives you neutral information, like Lonely Planet or something like it.Nicholas Saputra

Before leaving I wrote this list to clarify my own ideas and to see what I learnt from my mistakes.
Maybe someone else could find it useful too.
If you are lucky someone, maybe the magazine you collaborate with, has sent you in foreign city or country to do an amazing five pages reportage about the local art scene. If you are extra lucky maybe your magazine would be also open to pay you for that.
But you know, even Oriana Fallaci and Martha Gellhorn would have an hard time to find good assignment nowadays.
Times are tougher and tougher, especially in the field of contemporary art.
If you’re an enterprising free lance journalist or art critic you can probably decide to make a project of your own and try to sell it later to magazines and newspaper. Maybe you can even make a book out of it.
Anyways remember to plan every step in advance.
1. Focus your research
Or maybe you want to have a general picture, not very specific but quite thorough.
This second kind of macro reportage is the one I personally like the most. However my tips are valid also if you are conducting a more specific research.
